Author’s Note: I wrote this article in 2020 and presented it to our church. Since then, the nightmare has grown far worse and more demonic. Euthanasia is exploding across America and around the world at a terrifying pace. What murderers call “compassion” has unleashed a full-scale culture of death. A short 2026 update exposing just a few of the latest horrors, especially Canada’s MAID killing machine, appears at the end of this article. Because the evil runs much deeper than one paper can contain, Part Two titled “The Culture of Death: Further Exposing the Horrors of Physician-Assisted Suicide” is already in the works.
Part One
Death with Dignity and Compassionate Care Legislation are Neither Dignified Nor Compassionate.
By Patti Johnson
2020
Deceptive Titles Hide a Deadly Agenda
Many people are fooled by the deceptive titles used by promoters of Physician Assisted Suicide Legislation. They worry about patients lingering in pain on life support and ask, “Don’t you have any compassion for these suffering people?” This paper will answer those questions.
Physician Assisted Suicide Is the Opposite of Compassion
There are many reasons I oppose Physician Assisted Suicide/Euthanasia. Promoters call it “Death with Dignity” or “Compassionate Care,” but it is neither. It is the exact opposite.
We Already Have Real Choices Without Legalized Killing
One of the most popular arguments for legalizing Physician Assisted Suicide is that patients suffer terribly or do not want to linger on machines. This argument is hollow. We already have living wills that let patients refuse life support. We have DNR orders. Patients can reject chemo or any treatment they do not want. We do not need assisted suicide to stop unwanted medical prolongation of life. Pain specialists confirm they have the tools and medicines to control pain even for the terminally ill. Dr. Glassman, a doctor to the elderly and an Orthodox Rabbi, opposed New Jersey’s law forcing doctors to prescribe suicide pills. He said, “Some may claim I want dying patients to suffer, heaven forbid. Quite the opposite. We as physicians have ample tools to alleviate suffering for the living, even the terminally ill, without licensing suicide.”
He added that being forced to kill violates his calling to heal. Legalizing euthanasia turns doctors into agents of death and destroys the Hippocratic Oath that commands “First do no harm” and “I will abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm.”
Only God Holds the Power Over Life and Death
As a Christian, I believe only God gives life and only God takes life. Only our Creator knows our appointed time. Job 14:5 declares, “You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer.”
Nine states have passed these laws. Florida may join them next November. The laws define a “terminally ill” patient as someone with six months or less to live. This changes everything about how doctors treat the sick, elderly, and even the depressed.
The Deadly Six-Month Lie That Fuels Guilt
Doctors must now tell patients they have six months or less. Then they must mention “merciful options” including assisted suicide. Patients hear that their family will not have to watch them suffer and that medical bills will not devour their inheritance. They are told suicide is “death with dignity” and that fighting to live is selfish and undignified. Instead of being encouraged to fight the disease, patients are guilted into ending their lives. The soft words “compassionate care” hide the raw truth: the patient is committing suicide and the doctor is helping kill him.
Deceptive Language That Masks Murder
Promoters carefully chose language to sell the agenda, just as they did with abortion using “choice” and “my body.” The old Hemlock Society rebranded itself “Compassion and Choices.” “Death with dignity” sounds noble but really means suicide is dignified while fighting for life is not.
Real Stories That Expose the Cruelty
Here are real accounts that reveal why euthanasia is so dangerous.
Account 1: The Man Who Outlived His Death Sentence
Thirty-five years ago a Colorado radio talk show host was diagnosed with stage-four metastatic lung cancer and given six months to live. He told me his story during a radio interview with him. He outlived that prediction by over thirty-five years. If euthanasia had been legal then, doctors would have been required to offer him the suicide option to spare his family suffering and preserve their inheritance. Instead of fighting, he would have been pressured to give up. His family would have lost decades with him. Even if he had lived only the predicted six months, that time could have been used to heal relationships. Assisted suicide robs families of precious final months and plants guilt that fighting for your life is selfish. “Death with dignity” implies that battling illness lacks dignity while suicide shows strength. This heaps guilt on vulnerable patients. Satan traffics in chaos, confusion, death, destruction, and guilt. Jesus brings clarity, order, life, and forgiveness.
Account 2: My Father’s Precious Extra Year Could Have Been Stolen by Euthanasia
My own father was diagnosed with stage-four metastatic lung cancer. The doctor coldly told my mother and me he had six months. I ordered the doctor not to tell my dad the six-month limit. I said tell him he has stage-four cancer but remind him only God decides when he goes home to heaven. My dad lived one and a half more precious years. Relationships healed. I grew closer to him while helping care for him. A week before he died he told his WWII buddy he would soon fly missions for Jesus in heaven. Those eighteen months were a treasure. Euthanasia would have stolen them from us. Many families never even get to say goodbye because they learn of the suicide only after it happens. They are left devastated.
Account 3: Miracles Can Happen When Death Is Not Hastened
Countless people have defied doctors’ death sentences. Miracles still occur. Dr. Tom Renfro had massive tumors and was given days to live. His church prayed around the clock for a miracle, not for an easy death. They did not pray for him to die so he would quit suffering. They prayed for complete healing. His oncologist said the odds of recovery were near zero. Chemotherapy was given only to get him through Christmas. Instead, the tumors vanished completely. Doctors called it a dramatic, unexplainable response. After two weeks Tom stood in front of the congregation that had prayed him home. He declared it was a true miracle of God. A few months later he was baptized in the Jordan River with arms raised, shouting “Glory to God! Glory to God!” Assisted suicide allows no time for miracles.

Account 4: Insurance Companies Choose Death Because It Is Cheaper
In California, after assisted suicide was legalized, an insurance company denied chemotherapy to a woman fighting for her life and approved the $1.20 suicide pill instead. She said patients who want to fight are now routinely denied treatment because death is always the cheapest option.[1] Support groups that once encouraged hope now carry a dark cloud of suicide. Depression spreads and people start saying they just want to end it
Account 5: Depression Is Treated With Death Pills Instead of Hope
Another survivor was diagnosed with grade-four glioblastoma and given four months. Three doctors said nothing could be done. He would have qualified for assisted suicide in Oregon or California. He said that in a dark moment of depression he might have chosen it, but supportive family helped him access experimental treatment. Three years later he is alive, enjoying his second son and living fully. Even top doctors cannot predict survival. Too often patients now receive death diagnosis and are given lethal drugs instead of further treatment and help with depression.
Account 6: Legal Suicide Turns Despair Into Accepted Sin
After Colorado legalized euthanasia, a depressed Christian man who was not physically sick told me suicide was no longer a sin because it was legal. He was planning on being euthanized. These laws warp people’s moral compass. I explained to him that abortion is legal and that abortion is still a sin. Just because something is legal does not make it right. He then changed his mind and got help for his depression.
Account 7: Joni Eareckson Tada – The Ministry That Euthanasia Would Have Murdered
When I was a flight attendant I met Joni Eareckson Tada on one of my flights. It was a long flight and after the passengers were fed I was able to sit down and talk with her. Joni explained to me why she was against euthanasia. She became a quadriplegic as a teenager. She plunged into deep depression and begged friends to help her die. If physician-assisted suicide had been legal, doctors might have encouraged her to end her life. Instead, Christian friends and family pointed her to Jesus. Today she runs a worldwide ministry helping disabled people, paints and draws beautifully with a brush in her mouth, provides wheelchairs globally, and has even been Oscar-nominated for a song.[2] God had a mighty plan for her life. Euthanasia would have destroyed that plan and robbed the world of her treasure.[3] [4]
Account 8: They Starved My Friend Marie to Death in an American Hospital
While volunteering at Little Sisters of the Poor I helped 85-year-old Marie, who had Parkinson’s, with her painting. One day she entered the hospital with pneumonia. The doctor told her he would not give antibiotics because she was old and had Parkinson’s. He admitted the antibiotics would work but said she would just get sick again. When her daughter demanded the living will that called for antibiotics, the staff said that it could not be found and they had to abide by the doctor’s orders. While the family scrambled to find another copy of Marie’s living will Marie was left unattended. For five days the hospital refused to allow Marie food, water, or basic care. It was just like Nazi Germany. By the time the living will was located, Marie was dead. This callous evil still brings me to tears. We now live in a culture of death that began with abortion and has grown to infanticide and euthanasia. Public schools have trained generations in moral relativism through lifeboat scenarios that teach sacrificing the old and weak. Those students are now doctors. That is why I urge parents to remove children from public schools. Also, make several copies of your living will and give it to people that can be trusted.
Account 9: The Netherlands – Where Families Hold Down Their Own Mothers to Be Killed
In the Netherlands a 70-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s was euthanized against her will. She was slipped a sedative in her coffee without her knowledge. When she woke and fought the lethal injection, her husband and son held her down while the doctor continued. The review panel cleared the doctor even though the patient had never requested death and had said she did not want to die.[5] Families now restrain their own loved ones so doctors can kill them. Depression, alcoholism, tinnitus, and even autism are accepted reasons for euthanasia. Suicide hotlines are replaced by death on demand.
A 29-year-old mentally ill woman in the Netherlands was euthanized though she was not terminally ill. A cold and callous Dutch woman complained to my sister that her parents were “still alive” and “wasting resources”, echoing Hitler’s “useless eaters.”
Legalizing assisted suicide opened the door to widespread abuse. Promoters promised safeguards, but we see the same expansion as with abortion. Belgium and the Netherlands now euthanize the old, infirm, and “burdensome,” including dementia patients. Elderly people fear hospitals and wear wristbands saying, “Please do not kill me.” In the Netherlands the Dutch right to die group wants a Grim Reaper mobile euthanasia machine to come to your home to kill you. [6]
Doctors push death even when it is unclear the patient truly wants it. The “right to die” quickly became a “duty to die.”
Other European countries are following suit. Belgium allows child euthanasia. [7]
Canada Following in the Netherlands Footsteps
In Canada, organ procurement agencies now solicit organs from suicidal and depressed patients, encouraging them to “leave a legacy” by dying. Hospitals must report patients facing imminent death. The message is clear: your death is more valuable to society than your life. (This news was reported in 2020 on prolife websites but it is just now hitting mainstream media in 2026)
A faithful palliative care hospice in British Columbia was ordered to allow euthanasia on site or lose funding. They chose to forfeit hundreds of thousands rather than hasten death.
The Euthanasia Lobby in Canada is pushing for euthanasia of mentally disabled people who can’t consent. [8]
Increasingly we see the scripture being fulfilled:
Isaiah 5:20 – Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Jesus warned as a sign of His pending return in Matthew 24:12- “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold”
We must reject this culture of death and affirm that every life belongs to God.
Update 2026: The Culture of Death Accelerates – Canada’s MAID Slaughter
(This is just a short update. A longer update is in the works for part 2)
Since this article was first written, the euthanasia nightmare has exploded. In the United States, physician-assisted suicide is now legal in 13 states plus Washington, D.C., with New York becoming the 13th state when Governor Kathy Hochul signed it into law in February 2026. More states are racing to follow. But Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program stands as the blood-soaked warning of where this road always leads. The country is barreling toward its 100,000th euthanasia death this summer, after a record 16,499 killings in 2024 alone – more than 5 percent of all deaths nationwide.
Disabled Canadians now report being pressured to choose death weekly during routine doctor visits. Combat veterans have been coldly offered MAID instead of the care they earned. A 26-year-old man with mental health struggles was euthanized in British Columbia on December 30, 2025, despite his family’s desperate intervention. Thousands more choose death because of poverty, loneliness, or endless nationalized healthcare waitlists. Over 23,000 Canadians died waiting for medical care in a single year as the government poured resources into killing instead of healing. The liberals are still ramming through expansions to mental illness. These are not mercy killings. They are state-sanctioned murders dressed up as compassion, exactly as the slippery slope always predicted. Full details and documentation are available here:

The Sarco Death Pod: Mechanical Murder in a Coffin
Euthanasia enthusiasts have sunk to a new low with the Sarco “death pod,” a 3D-printable coffin-like capsule invented by “Dr. Death” Philip Nitschke that lets victims push a button and suffocate themselves with nitrogen in minutes. In the first reported use in Switzerland in 2024, the pod failed horribly: the woman inside convulsed violently, an alarm screamed that she was still alive, and the attending doctor had to wait and then manually finish killing her, leaving strangulation marks on her neck. This demonic contraption exposes the lie of “peaceful death with dignity.” It is nothing but cold, mechanical slaughter dressed up as innovation, and new versions for couples are already in development. [9] [10]
This is the brutal reality we must fight with everything we have. The United States is not far behind in the expansion of euthanasia. Every life belongs to God not to doctors, bureaucrats, or cost-cutting governments.
