ON THE ROAD TO ARBA MINCH

Oil

“On the Road to Arba Minch” is a painting of a young Ethiopian girl on the road to the town of Arba Minch, Ethiopia. My husband ,Brad, asked her if he could take her picture. She was so excited after Brad gave her five “Birr” (Ethiopian currency) for posing that she ran without checking traffic across the street to show her mother the money. Fortunately, there were no cars coming on this busy road. My husband almost had a heart attack!

On the Road to Arba Minch is painted on un-tempered masonite with five coats of Renaissance gesso. The under-painting is done in the lean oil  Azuraccio blue-grey ten value palette with the color of the noonday sun mixed in. The over-painting is done with the fatter oil paints of the flesh palette. The technique of painting fat over lean prevents cracks from forming as the painting ages. This painting should last hundreds of years if kept out of direct sunlight.
