FRENCH COUNTRYSIDE WINDOWSILL

Oil on Panel
14″ x 11″
Private Collection

While on a trip I snapped a picture of a window in the French countryside. It was winter and there were no leaves on the vine but I imagined how it would look with leaves on the vine and a geranium on the windowsill. I had decided that I would paint a scene from every trip I was fortunate enough to take. This would be one of my memories of this wonderful trip.

It is painted on un-tempered masonite panel with five coats of Renaissance marble gesso. Additional gesso is added to the outside wall of the home with a palette knife to give texture and interest to the painting. The wood is also built up with gesso to show depth and wood grain. Photography is so widespread with the creation of digital cameras that I decided to use these techniques to add texture and depth to some of my oil paintings to differentiate them from a flat photograph.

French Countryside Windowsill is painted ala prima and is part of my personal collection of memories from trips taken.
