Mother and Child in Window is painted on un-tempered masonite with five coats of Renaissance marble gesso. The wood window frame is built up in relief using the Renaissance marble gesso to depict the rough weathered texture and grain of the wood. The adobe wall also has a slight texture. The background and portraits are painted on a smoother surface of sanded Renaissance marble gesso.
The underpainting is painted with the ten value azuraccio blue/grey palette.
The overpainting is painted with the fatter oil paints to prevent cracking while drying.
The mother and child are from the Gedeo tribe in Ethiopia. Their village is adjacent to a coffee plantation. While taking a walk my husband Brad saw her relaxing with her baby resting on the windowsill.
The finished painting was coated with an oil medium. After drying one year it was coated with five layers of Damar Varnish. This painting should last hundreds of years if treated with care and kept out of direct sunlight.
