This is the full color over-painting of “Young Queen of Sheba.” I love the color in this painting and I did not want to leave the painting in the under-painting stage, though many people wanted it to remain in the azuraccio under-painting stage. So I started a totally new painting and finished it with the over-painting colors.
Young Queen of Sheba is painted on un-tempered masonite board with five layers of Renaissance marble gesso. The high points of her veil, which catch light, are built up in relief with the gesso, as is the adobe wall next to the “Young Queen of Sheba.” Adding texture and depth to a painting with gesso gives added interest to the viewer and also differentiates our craft from the flatness of photography.
The under-painting is in azuraccio (blue-grey ten value palette). The finished painting is coated with a special oil medium. After it dried for one year it was then given five coats of Damar Varnish. The finished painting should last hundreds of years if kept out of direct sunlight.
